Bedrijfsoverzicht

American Water Works Company, Inc. functions as a comprehensive provider of essential water and wastewater services throughout the United States, including specific operations on military installations and managed contracts with municipal clients. The enterprise operates within the Utilities sector, specifically classified under the Regulated Water industry, which implies a business model characterized by stable, regulated returns and essential infrastructure provision. This utility giant maintains a substantial market capitalization of $26.80B and generates annual revenue reaching $5.14B while employing approximately 7,000 individuals across its operations. The combination of a market cap exceeding twenty-six billion dollars and revenue of over five billion dollars indicates that the company commands a significant position within the regulated water utility landscape, reflecting the capital intensity and scale required to maintain nationwide water infrastructure networks.

Financiële gezondheid

The company reported a Total Revenue of $5.14B and Net Income of $1.11B over the trailing twelve months, with an EBITDA of $2.79B, highlighting a distinct gap between top-line generation and bottom-line profit that underscores the substantial cost structure inherent in utility operations. Specifically, the difference between the $5.14B revenue and $1.11B net income reveals that roughly 21.6% of revenue translates to profit after all expenses, including taxes and interest, are deducted. The firm's Free Cash Flow stands at -$2,340,999,936, a negative figure that suggests current cash generation is insufficient to cover capital expenditures, indicating a need for external financing to fund infrastructure maintenance and expansion. Despite this cash outflow, the balance sheet shows a Cash balance of $153.00M against total Debt of $15.93B, resulting in a Debt to Equity ratio of 146.99, which characterizes the capital structure as heavily leveraged rather than conservative. Furthermore, the Current Ratio is recorded at 0.46, a metric that signals potential challenges in meeting short-term liabilities with existing liquid assets without relying on new financing. Management effectiveness is further illuminated by a Return on Equity of 10.5% and a Return on Assets of 3.5%, where the disparity between these two metrics reflects the high level of debt utilized to finance the asset base.

Waarderingsbeoordeling

Valuation metrics for American Water Works Company, Inc. show a Trailing Twelve Month P/E Ratio of 24.12 and a Forward P/E of 20.86, implying that the market anticipates a reduction in the multiple or a catch-up in earnings growth that would justify a lower future price relative to expected earnings. The Price to Book ratio is calculated at 2.47, indicating that the market values the company at a significant premium over its net book value, likely compensating for the stability of its regulated cash flows and monopoly-like business characteristics. Alternative valuation perspectives are provided by a Price to Sales ratio of 5.21 and an EV/EBITDA of 15.26, suggesting that the market prices the firm based on both revenue scale and operational earnings power without fully discounting for its high leverage. Price action over the last year has oscillated between a 52-Week High of $150.51 and a 52-Week Low of $121.28, meaning the stock is trading within a range that reflects market volatility typical for the utilities sector. The Beta of 0.73 demonstrates that the stock exhibits lower volatility than the broader market, making it a less sensitive instrument to general equity market swings compared to high-beta technology or growth stocks.

Growth & Income

Revenue growth for the company is recorded at 5.8% year-over-year, while earnings growth is currently 0.0%, indicating that profit margins have remained static despite top-line expansion, which implies that cost pressures or regulatory adjustments are offsetting revenue gains. As a consistent dividend payer, the company offers a Dividend Yield of 2.4% supported by a Payout Ratio of 57.1%, a level that suggests the payout is partially funded by retained earnings and cash flow generation rather than solely by current net income. The static earnings growth rate relative to revenue growth highlights that the business is prioritizing operational stability and dividend maintenance over aggressive earnings acceleration in the current period. Overall, the company presents a profile of steady, moderate revenue expansion coupled with a mature income strategy that relies on regulated returns rather than rapid earnings compounding.
