회사 개요

Mercer International Inc. is a prominent player in the basic materials sector, specifically within the paper and paper products industry, where it focuses on the manufacturing and sale of northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) and northern bleached hardwood kraft (NBHK) pulp. The company's operational footprint spans the United States, Germany, China, and other international markets, serving a diverse global clientele through its two distinct business segments: Pulp and Solid Wood. With a market capitalization of $87.08M, an annual revenue of $1.87B, and an employee base of 3,545, the firm represents a mid-sized enterprise with significant physical production capacity. These financial scales indicate that while the company possesses substantial revenue generation capabilities, its relatively modest market cap suggests a valuation that may not fully reflect its historical production volume or global distribution network.

재무 건전성

The company reported a total revenue of $1.87B over the trailing twelve months, yet this generated a net income of -$497,888,992 and an EBITDA of -$19,913,000, revealing a severe disconnect between top-line sales and bottom-line profitability due to high operating costs or significant non-operating expenses. The free cash flow stands at -$41,798,876, which implies a lack of financial flexibility to fund capital expenditures or repay obligations without external financing. In terms of margin performance, the gross margin is 4.9%, indicating thin pricing power relative to input costs, while the operating margin of -13.9% and profit margin of -26.7% highlight structural inefficiencies that erode earnings before interest and taxes as well as final profitability. The balance sheet shows a cash position of $186.80M against total debt of $1.63B, resulting in a debt-to-equity ratio of 2388.72, which characterizes a highly leveraged financial structure rather than a conservative one. Despite the heavy debt load, the current ratio of 3.05 suggests adequate short-term liquidity, as current assets are more than three times current liabilities. Furthermore, the return on equity is -200.0% and the return on assets is -5.2%, metrics that clearly demonstrate that management is currently destroying shareholder value and utilizing assets inefficiently.

밸류에이션 평가

Valuation metrics for Mercer International present a complex picture, with a trailing P/E ratio listed as N/A and a forward P/E of -1.60, the latter indicating that expected future earnings are negative and rendering traditional earnings-based valuation methods inapplicable. The price-to-book ratio is 1.28, suggesting the market values the company slightly above its book value despite the lack of current earnings power. Alternative valuation multiples provide additional context, with a price-to-sales ratio of 0.05 and an EV/EBITDA of -76.63, both figures implying that the stock is priced extremely low relative to its sales and historical earnings generation capabilities. In terms of trading range, the 52-week high is $5.68 and the 52-week low is $1.23, meaning the current share price is trading near the bottom of this established range. The beta value of 0.78 indicates that the stock exhibits lower volatility than the broader market, moving less aggressively than the S&P 500 in both up and down markets.

Growth & Income

Growth metrics reveal a contractionary trend, with revenue growth year-over-year at -8.0% and earnings growth year-over-year listed as N/A due to recent losses. The negative revenue growth rate implies that the company is currently losing market share or facing declining demand, which is further complicated by the fact that earnings are negative rather than growing faster than revenue. Regarding income distribution, the company offers a dividend yield of 16.0% with a payout ratio of 15.7%, a combination that appears unsustainable given the negative net income of -$497,888,992. The high payout ratio alongside negative earnings suggests that dividends are being paid from cash reserves or debt rather than from operational profits. Overall, Mercer International Inc. presents a profile characterized by declining revenue, negative earnings, and a dividend policy that is difficult to sustain under current financial conditions.
