회사 개요

Fortis Inc. operates as a regulated utility entity providing electric and gas services across Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean region. The company is specifically engaged in generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity to a substantial base of approximately 459,000 retail customers, with a primary focus on the southeastern Arizona market including the greater Tucson metropolitan area. This business model places the entity firmly within the Utilities sector and the Utilities - Regulated Electric industry, where revenue generation is typically driven by regulated rates rather than pure market competition. The company demonstrates significant scale with a market capitalization of $29.22 billion, annual revenue of $12.17 billion, and an employee count of 9,926. These valuation figures indicate that the market assigns a substantial enterprise value to the utility's infrastructure and operational assets, reflecting its established position as a major player in the North American energy landscape.

재무 건전성

The company reported trailing twelve-month revenue of $12.17 billion, resulting in a net income of $1.71 billion and an EBITDA of $5.63 billion. The substantial gap between the $12.17 billion revenue and the $1.71 billion net income highlights a significant cost structure typical of capital-intensive utility operations, where operating expenses and depreciation heavily impact bottom-line profitability. While the reported free cash flow is negative at -$2,633,250,048, this metric reflects the heavy capital expenditures required to maintain and expand the regulated electric grid, indicating limited immediate financial flexibility for dividends or share buybacks without external capital support. The gross margin stands at 45.6%, the operating margin at 28.9%, and the profit margin at 14.8%, illustrating how the company retains value after covering the cost of goods sold and operational overhead before arriving at net earnings. On the balance sheet, the company holds $367.00 million in cash against a total debt obligation of $34.69 billion, resulting in a debt-to-equity ratio of 134.11% which signifies a highly leveraged financial structure dependent on long-term financing. The current ratio is 0.51, indicating that current assets are insufficient to cover current liabilities without relying on cash flow generation or asset sales in the short term. Management effectiveness is assessed through a return on equity of 7.6% and a return on assets of 3.0%, suggesting that the company generates modest returns relative to the shareholders' equity and total asset base, a common characteristic for highly regulated, debt-funded utility businesses.

밸류에이션 평가

The stock trades with a trailing twelve-month P/E ratio of 23.33 and a forward P/E of 20.37, suggesting that the market expects earnings growth to accelerate in the coming year as the forward multiple is lower than the trailing multiple. The price-to-book ratio is 1.83, indicating that the market values the company at a premium of 83% above its net tangible assets, which may reflect the value of intangible assets or regulatory franchises not fully captured on the book balance sheet. Alternative valuation metrics show a price-to-sales ratio of 2.40 and an EV/EBITDA of 11.93, providing a different perspective on value that accounts for enterprise value and operational cash generation capabilities. The stock has traded between a 52-week high of $58.78 and a 52-week low of $43.28, and without the current price explicitly provided in the facts, the relative positioning can only be described within this historical trading range. The beta of 0.44 indicates that the stock exhibits significantly lower volatility than the broader market, moving with roughly 56% of the intensity of the overall market index, which aligns with the defensive nature of regulated utility stocks.

Growth & Income

Revenue growth year-over-year is 4.4% while earnings growth year-over-year is 5.0%, demonstrating that profitability is expanding at a faster pace than top-line sales, likely due to favorable margin dynamics or cost controls. The company offers a dividend yield of 3.2% with a payout ratio of 73.1%, a combination that requires careful monitoring given the high debt load and negative free cash flow, as the payout ratio is sustained primarily through earnings accretion rather than organic cash generation. Given the negative free cash flow, the dividend is not being funded by internal cash reserves, which implies a reliance on external capital markets to maintain the yield for shareholders. The overall profile presents a high-yield income play supported by steady single-digit earnings growth, but with significant balance sheet leverage and limited liquidity that must be weighed against the attractive dividend return.
