公司概述

Fortis Inc. operates as a utility company providing electricity and natural gas services across Canada, the United States, and Caribbean nations, serving approximately 459,000 retail customers in southeastern Arizona and other regions. The company functions within the Utilities sector, specifically the Regulated Electric industry, which implies its operations are subject to regulatory oversight and typically characterized by stable cash flows derived from essential infrastructure services. With a market capitalization of $29.22 billion, the enterprise manages a workforce of 9,926 employees and reported total revenue of $12.17 billion over the trailing twelve months. These valuation and revenue figures indicate that Fortis Inc. maintains a substantial position within the North American utility market, reflecting a mature business model supported by a significant operational footprint and a large customer base in regulated jurisdictions.

财务健康

The company reported revenue of $12.17 billion, net income of $1.71 billion, and EBITDA of $5.63 billion for the trailing twelve months, illustrating a cost structure where operating expenses consume a significant portion of gross receipts before reaching the bottom line. The free cash flow stands at -$2.63 billion, which indicates that current capital expenditures and operational outflows exceed operating cash generation, suggesting a period of substantial investment in infrastructure that constrains immediate financial flexibility. Gross margin is established at 45.6%, operating margin at 28.9%, and profit margin at 14.8%, revealing that while the company retains a healthy portion of revenue after direct costs, regulatory pass-throughs and operational overheads significantly impact the final profitability per dollar of sales. On the balance sheet, cash holdings of $367 million are dwarfed by total debt of $34.69 billion, resulting in a debt-to-equity ratio of 134.11%, which characterizes a highly leveraged capital structure typical of capital-intensive utility firms. The current ratio of 0.51 suggests that current liabilities exceed current assets, indicating tight short-term liquidity conditions that rely heavily on long-term financing rather than immediate working capital buffers. Return on equity is 7.6% and return on assets is 3.0%, metrics that reflect the management's effectiveness in generating returns relative to shareholder equity and the total asset base, respectively, within a low-margin, high-investment regulatory environment.

估值评估

The trailing twelve-month P/E ratio is 23.33, while the forward P/E is projected at 20.37, implying that the market expects earnings growth that would justify a lower multiple in the future compared to historical performance. The price-to-book ratio stands at 1.83, indicating that the market values the company at a premium of 83% over its net asset book value, likely reflecting the value of regulated assets and franchise rights not fully captured on the balance sheet. Alternative valuation metrics such as the price-to-sales ratio of 2.40 and an EV/EBITDA of 11.93 provide context on how the company is priced relative to its top-line revenue and unlevered earnings power, suggesting a valuation consistent with established infrastructure plays. The stock's 52-week trading range spans from a low of $43.28 to a high of $58.78, and assuming the current market price aligns with recent trading activity near the lower end of this spectrum, the shares are trading significantly below their recent peak, potentially reflecting market sentiment regarding utility sector valuations. The beta of 0.44 indicates that the stock exhibits low price volatility relative to the broader market, behaving as a defensive asset that moves with less intensity than the overall equity index.

Growth & Income

Revenue growth for the trailing twelve months is 4.4%, while earnings growth is 5.0%, indicating that profitability is expanding at a slightly faster pace than top-line sales, which suggests improving operational efficiency or favorable margin dynamics despite inflationary pressures. As a dividend payer, Fortis Inc. offers a yield of 3.2% with a payout ratio of 73.1%, a level that requires careful monitoring given the high debt load, though the regulated nature of the business often supports consistent dividend payments over the long term. The company does not reinvest all earnings into growth initiatives to the exclusion of shareholder returns, but rather balances dividend distribution with capital allocation needs in a capital-intensive utility environment. Overall, the growth and income profile presents a scenario of modest top-line expansion paired with a solid but leveraged income stream, characteristic of a regulated utility seeking steady returns rather than aggressive expansion.
