Bedrijfsoverzicht

Valhi, Inc. is a diversified entity operating within the Basic Materials sector, specifically focusing on the Chemicals industry through the production and marketing of titanium dioxide pigments alongside component products and real estate management. These titanium dioxide pigments, identified as white inorganic substances, serve essential functions in various varnishes and industrial applications across Europe, North America, the Asia Pacific, and international markets. The company currently employs a workforce of 2826 individuals to support its extensive operations and distribution networks. With a market capitalization of $399.06M and annual revenue reaching $2.08B, Valhi positions itself as a mid-sized player in the global chemicals landscape. The market cap figure of $399.06M indicates that while the company possesses significant operational scale, it is valued in a range often associated with established but potentially undervalued or cyclical industrial firms. The revenue of $2.08B demonstrates that the business generates substantial cash inflows from its core pigment and component product lines, providing a solid base for operations despite the specific challenges faced in certain reporting periods. This scale allows Valhi to maintain a presence in key manufacturing hubs, though the valuation suggests the market is applying a cautious lens to its growth prospects relative to its revenue base.

Financiële gezondheid

The company reported a revenue of $2.08B over the trailing twelve months, yet it posted a net income of $-57,600,000, creating a significant disparity that highlights a strained cost structure or high operating expenses relative to sales volume. Despite generating $61.70M in EBITDA, the entity recorded a free cash flow of $-74,525,000, indicating that capital expenditures or working capital requirements are consuming cash faster than operations can replenish it. The gross margin stands at 14.4%, which suggests that the company retains a modest portion of revenue after covering the direct costs of producing titanium dioxide pigments and component products. However, the operating margin is negative at -12.7%, and the profit margin is -2.8%, revealing that overhead costs and administrative expenses are eroding profitability significantly before reaching the bottom line. On the balance sheet, Valhi holds $216.90M in cash against $611.60M in debt, resulting in a debt-to-equity ratio of 44.85, which characterizes the financial structure as highly leveraged and dependent on future cash generation or refinancing. The current ratio is 2.80, indicating that the company holds sufficient current assets to cover short-term liabilities nearly three times over, suggesting adequate liquidity management despite the leverage. Return on Equity is -4.0% and Return on Assets is -0.1%, metrics that collectively reveal that management has not yet generated returns on the capital invested in the business, pointing to ongoing challenges in translating operational scale into shareholder value.

Waarderingsbeoordeling

The trailing P/E ratio is listed as N/A due to the negative net income, while the forward P/E is 4.35, a stark contrast that implies the market expects earnings to turn positive or improve significantly in the future to justify a valuation based on forward multiples. The price-to-book ratio is 0.39, which indicates that the market values the company at less than 40% of its net asset value, suggesting a deep discount relative to its book equity. The price-to-sales ratio is 0.19, and the EV/EBITDA stands at 18.38; these alternative metrics suggest that while the stock trades at a fraction of its sales revenue, the enterprise value relative to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization remains elevated, potentially reflecting high debt costs or market skepticism about future earnings quality. The 52-week high is $20.00 and the 52-week low is $11.44, providing a trading range within which the current market price operates. To determine the current position relative to this range, one must note the wide spread between the high and low, which encompasses a volatility of over 75%, though the exact current price percentage requires the specific day's closing price which fluctuates, but generally, a stock trading near the low end of such a range often reflects market caution. The beta is 1.11, indicating that the stock price is expected to be 11% more volatile than the broader market, making it a riskier investment for those seeking stability in a defensive portfolio.

Growth & Income

Revenue growth year over year is 2.8%, while earnings growth is N/A due to the reported net loss; this dynamic implies that top-line expansion is occurring, but bottom-line profitability has not kept pace, preventing a meaningful earnings growth rate from being calculated. The company pays a dividend with a yield of 2.3% and maintains a payout ratio of 49.2%, which presents a complex sustainability challenge given the negative net income of $-57,600,000, as paying dividends while losing money requires drawing down cash reserves or increasing debt. Although the payout ratio is under 50%, the negative earnings mean the dividends are not funded by current profits, relying instead on the $216.90M cash on hand or debt capacity. The overall growth and income profile is characterized by modest revenue expansion coupled with negative earnings and a dividend policy that operates in the absence of positive net income, creating a unique investment profile for income-focused investors willing to accept the associated risks.
