Présentation de l'entreprise

Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. operates within the power and utility industries, owning and managing a diversified portfolio that includes regulated electric generation, water distribution, wastewater collection, and natural gas utility systems. This diversified operational model positions the entity within the Utilities sector, specifically the Utilities - Diversified industry, allowing it to generate revenue across multiple regulated asset classes. As of the latest available data, the company maintains a market capitalization of $4.84B and employs 3233 individuals across its operational footprint. The annual revenue generated by the portfolio reaches $2.43B, figures that indicate a mid-to-large scale utility operator with significant infrastructure exposure. The combination of a substantial market cap and multi-billion dollar revenue stream suggests the company holds a significant position in the North American utility landscape, providing essential services to a wide customer base through its regulated transmission and distribution networks.

Santé financière

The company reports a trailing twelve-month revenue of $2.43B, supported by a net income of $208.00M and an EBITDA of $919.70M. The substantial gap between the total revenue and the net income reveals a cost structure where operating expenses, including cost of goods sold and administrative costs, consume approximately 92.6% of gross revenue before interest and taxes. However, the free cash flow stands at -$451,737,504, which indicates a current lack of financial flexibility for capital expenditures or debt reduction without external financing or asset sales. The gross margin is recorded at 37.9%, while the operating margin is 17.8% and the profit margin is 7.4%; these figures collectively highlight the high fixed-cost nature of utility operations where profitability is heavily dependent on regulatory environments and fuel prices. The balance sheet shows a cash position of $32.70M against total debt of $6.56B, resulting in a debt-to-equity ratio of 129.95%, which characterizes a highly leveraged capital structure typical for capital-intensive utility firms. Liquidity is assessed via a current ratio of 1.00, indicating that current assets are only sufficient to cover current liabilities, leaving little room for error in short-term liquidity management. Furthermore, the return on equity is 2.6% and the return on assets is 2.1%, metrics that suggest management effectiveness in generating returns is currently constrained by the heavy debt load and low profit margins inherent to the sector.

Évaluation de la valorisation

The valuation metrics show a trailing twelve-month P/E ratio of 23.22 compared to a forward P/E of 15.46. The significant disparity between these two figures implies that the market expects a substantial improvement in earnings trajectory or a re-rating of the stock based on anticipated future performance. The price-to-book ratio stands at 1.08, indicating that the market values the company's equity at a slight premium relative to its tangible book value. Alternative valuation metrics such as the price-to-sales ratio of 1.99 and an EV/EBITDA of 12.98 provide context for valuation relative to revenue and cash generation capabilities respectively. Historical price volatility is framed by a 52-week high of $7.11 and a 52-week low of $4.45. Without a specific current share price provided in the data to calculate the exact percentage deviation, the stock trades within this established historical range, reflecting investor sentiment regarding its risk profile. The beta value of 0.89 indicates that the stock exhibits lower price volatility relative to the broader market, suggesting it moves with slightly less intensity than the overall equity index.

Growth & Income

Regarding growth metrics, the revenue growth year-over-year is listed as N/A, and the earnings growth year-over-year is also N/A. The absence of growth rates prevents a direct comparison of earnings growth speed versus revenue growth, though the static figures suggest a mature business profile where organic expansion may be limited or data is not currently tracked. As a dividend payer, the company offers a dividend yield of 4.2% with a payout ratio of 96.3%. This payout ratio implies that nearly all net income is distributed to shareholders, which may raise questions about sustainability given the negative free cash flow and the high level of debt obligations. Consequently, the company relies heavily on earnings retention or other capital sources to maintain dividend payments rather than reinvesting substantial earnings into internal growth projects. The overall growth and income profile is characterized by a high-yield income stream coupled with stagnant reported growth metrics and a capital structure that requires careful management of liquidity and debt service.
