Descripción de la empresa

National HealthCare Corporation operates within the Healthcare sector, specifically targeting the Medical Care Facilities industry, where it provides essential services to skilled nursing facilities, assisted and independent living facilities, homecare and hospice agencies, as well as health hospitals. This operational scope places the entity at the intersection of acute care and long-term care, addressing a critical need for post-acute and residential medical support. The company's scale is substantial, evidenced by a market capitalization of $2.53 billion and a workforce comprising 15,278 employees. These financial dimensions, particularly the market cap exceeding two and a half billion dollars, indicate that the organization holds a significant position within its niche, while the revenue of $1.52 billion demonstrates a robust operational footprint capable of sustaining extensive staffing levels across its diverse portfolio of facilities.

Salud financiera

The company reported a total revenue of $1.52 billion over the trailing twelve months, generating a net income of $120.02 million and an EBITDA of $173.27 million. The substantial gap between the $1.52 billion in revenue and the $120.02 million in net income highlights a cost structure where operating expenses consume approximately 92% of top-line revenue before interest and taxes, suggesting a highly leveraged operational model dependent on volume. Free cash flow stands at $108.38 million, which provides the company with significant financial flexibility to fund capital expenditures, service expansions, or debt reduction without relying solely on external financing. Analyzing the profitability metrics reveals a gross margin of 39.3%, indicating the efficiency of cost of goods sold relative to revenue, while an operating margin of 8.6% and a profit margin of 7.9% reflect the challenges of managing overhead costs in a service-heavy industry. On the balance sheet, the firm holds $255.80 million in cash against $87.07 million in debt, resulting in a debt-to-equity ratio of 8.10, which signifies a highly leveraged capital structure rather than a conservative one. The current ratio is 1.82, indicating that the company possesses 1.82 dollars in current assets for every dollar of current liabilities, which suggests adequate short-term liquidity to meet its obligations. Return on Equity is calculated at 11.9% and Return on Assets at 5.3%, metrics that reveal the effectiveness of management in generating profits from shareholders' equity versus the total asset base, with the lower ROA relative to ROE pointing to the amplifying effect of the high debt load on equity returns.

Evaluación de valoración

Valuation multiples for National HealthCare Corporation include a trailing P/E ratio of 21.22 and a forward P/E of 378.49. The dramatic discrepancy between the trailing P/E and the forward P/E implies that the market is pricing in a significant deterioration in expected earnings or that future earnings are anticipated to be negligible, as the forward multiple is exceptionally high compared to the historical average. The price-to-book ratio is 2.37, indicating that the market values the company's equity at more than double its book value, suggesting a premium for the quality of its assets or intangible brand value in the healthcare sector. Alternative valuation metrics such as a price-to-sales ratio of 1.67 and an EV/EBITDA of 13.66 provide different perspectives on value, suggesting the company trades at a moderate multiple of sales but a higher multiple of cash flow generation relative to its enterprise value. The stock's 52-week trading range spans from a low of $89.14 to a high of $174.54, meaning the current price sits within this established volatility band. The beta value is 0.59, which indicates that the stock's price volatility is less than 60% of the broader market's movement, suggesting it acts as a defensive holding with lower systematic risk during market downturns.

Growth & Income

Growth metrics show a revenue growth year-over-year of 4.6% and an earnings growth year-over-year of 306.3%. The fact that earnings growth vastly outpaces revenue growth implies a one-time event or a significant restructuring of costs that temporarily boosted profitability, rather than a sustained expansion of the revenue base. As a dividend payer, the company offers a dividend yield of 1.6% with a payout ratio of 33.0%, a figure that suggests the dividend is highly sustainable given that the payout covers only about one-third of the generated earnings. This conservative payout ratio allows the company to retain the majority of its profits for reinvestment or to build cash reserves. In summary, the overall profile presents a mature healthcare operator with steady revenue expansion but extraordinary earnings volatility, supported by a conservative payout policy that prioritizes capital preservation over aggressive income distribution.
