Bedrijfsoverzicht

The Marzetti Company is a leading manufacturer and marketer of specialty food products serving both retail and foodservice channels within the United States. Operating within the Consumer Defensive sector and the Packaged Foods industry, the firm focuses on providing essential pantry items that maintain demand regardless of economic fluctuations. The company currently holds a market capitalization of $3.90B and generates annual revenue of $1.94B while employing a workforce of 3700 individuals. These financial metrics indicate that Marzetti operates at a substantial scale, positioning it as a significant player in the competitive landscape of the American packaged food market. The breadth of its operations across two distinct segments underscores its diversified approach to capturing market share in both consumer-facing and commercial environments.

Financiële gezondheid

The company reported a trailing twelve-month revenue of $1.94B and a net income of $179.50M, supported by an EBITDA of $300.32M. The substantial gap between the $1.94B revenue and the $179.50M net income reveals a cost structure where operating expenses, taxes, and interest consume approximately 90.7% of total sales before reaching the bottom line. Free cash flow stands at $160.97M, which signifies the company's robust financial flexibility to fund operations, repay obligations, or pursue strategic initiatives without relying heavily on external financing. Profitability is further detailed by three key margins: a gross margin of 24.1%, an operating margin of 14.8%, and a profit margin of 9.3%. The gross margin of 24.1% indicates the efficiency of production and pricing power relative to the cost of goods sold, while the operating margin of 14.8% reflects the effectiveness of controlling overhead and administrative costs. The profit margin of 9.3% demonstrates the final efficiency in converting sales into actual net earnings for shareholders. On the balance sheet, the company holds $201.58M in cash against $38.77M in debt, resulting in a conservative leverage profile highlighted by a debt-to-equity ratio of 3.75. Despite the debt figure, the significant cash reserve suggests a strong liquidity position that can comfortably service existing liabilities. Short-term liquidity is further evidenced by a current ratio of 2.72, indicating that the company possesses $2.72 in current assets for every $1 of current liabilities, which points to a highly secure ability to meet short-term obligations. Management effectiveness is measured by a return on equity of 17.9% and a return on assets of 11.4%, metrics that reveal the firm's capability to generate significant returns on the capital invested by shareholders and the total asset base utilized in operations.

Waarderingsbeoordeling

Valuation metrics provide insight into market expectations, with a trailing P/E ratio of 21.75 and a forward P/E of 19.29. The difference between these two figures implies that the market expects earnings to grow in the coming periods, as the forward multiple is lower than the trailing multiple, suggesting an anticipated improvement in profitability. The price-to-book ratio stands at 3.77, indicating that the market values the company at a significant premium of nearly four times its net asset book value. Alternative valuation metrics such as the price-to-sales ratio of 2.01 and an EV/EBITDA of 12.42 offer additional context, suggesting that investors are willing to pay a moderate multiple relative to sales and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. Regarding price levels, the stock has traded between a 52-week low of $136.72 and a 52-week high of $193.40, providing a clear range for historical volatility analysis. The beta value of 0.49 indicates that the stock's price volatility is less than half that of the broader market, making it a less sensitive investment to general market swings compared to the S&P 500.

Growth & Income

Revenue growth over the last year stood at 1.7%, while earnings growth reached 20.9% for the same period. This divergence shows that earnings are growing significantly faster than revenue, which implies that the company is becoming more efficient or benefiting from pricing power that is outpacing sales volume expansion. As a dividend payer, The Marzetti Company offers a dividend yield of 2.8% with a payout ratio of 59.0%. This payout ratio is generally considered sustainable given the company's strong profitability and free cash flow generation, allowing it to return value to shareholders while retaining enough capital for reinvestment. The overall growth and income profile is characterized by steady double-digit earnings expansion supported by a consistent dividend yield, positioning the asset as a source of both capital appreciation and income within the defensive sector.
