Présentation de l'entreprise

California Water Service Group operates as a regulated water utility provider, delivering essential services for the production, purchase, storage, treatment, testing, distribution, and sale of water to domestic, industrial, and public sectors across California, Washington, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Texas. The company functions within the Utilities sector, specifically the Utilities - Regulated Water industry, which implies a business model characterized by regulated rates and a focus on essential infrastructure services rather than market-driven competition. As of the latest available data, the entity manages a market capitalization of $2.73B and generates annual revenue reaching $1.00B, supporting an operational workforce of 1336 employees. These valuation and revenue figures indicate that the company maintains a significant, albeit mid-sized, position within the regional utility landscape, reflecting a substantial asset base required to manage complex water distribution networks across multiple jurisdictions.

Santé financière

The company reported a trailing twelve-month revenue of $1.00B, with a corresponding net income of $128.21M and an EBITDA of $346.29M, illustrating a cost structure where operating expenses and taxes absorb approximately 62.4% of gross revenue before reaching the bottom line. The free cash flow stands at $-288,263,008, which suggests that capital expenditures for infrastructure maintenance and expansion currently exceed the cash generated from operations, limiting immediate financial flexibility for internal reinvestment without external financing. Profitability metrics reveal a gross margin of 53.6%, indicating efficient management of direct costs relative to sales, while an operating margin of 10.2% and a profit margin of 12.8% demonstrate the impact of fixed overhead and regulatory constraints on final earnings. The balance sheet shows a cash position of $51.82M against a total debt load of $1.62B, resulting in a debt-to-equity ratio of 95.55, which characterizes a highly leveraged financial structure typical of capital-intensive utility firms. Liquidity is constrained by a current ratio of 0.85, indicating that current liabilities exceed current assets, thereby requiring careful management of short-term obligations to avoid liquidity stress. Return on equity of 7.7% and return on assets of 2.3% reflect management's ability to generate returns relative to shareholder capital and the total asset base, respectively, though the low ROA is consistent with the asset-heavy nature of the regulated water industry.

Évaluation de la valorisation

Valuation multiples show a trailing P/E ratio of 21.29 compared to a forward P/E of 16.52, implying that the market expects earnings growth in the future that would justify the lower forward multiple relative to current earnings. The price-to-book ratio is set at 1.62, suggesting that the market values the company at a 62% premium over its book value, likely reflecting the tangible value of its water infrastructure assets. Alternative valuation metrics such as a price-to-sales ratio of 2.73 and an EV/EBITDA of 12.41 provide additional context, indicating that the company trades at a moderate multiple relative to both sales and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. Price metrics for the last year range from a 52-week low of $41.29 to a high of $51.63, meaning the current trading price sits within this historical volatility band, though the exact current price percentage is not calculable without the specific real-time quote. The beta of 0.61 indicates that the stock exhibits lower price volatility than the broader market, behaving more defensively as investors would expect from a regulated utility stock.

Growth & Income

Recent financial performance highlights a revenue growth rate of -1.0% year-over-year and an earnings growth rate of -42.2% year-over-year, signaling that earnings are contracting significantly faster than revenue, a phenomenon often driven by one-time costs or regulatory adjustments in regulated industries. As a dividend payer, the company offers a yield of 2.7% with a payout ratio of 55.8%, which appears sustainable relative to the current profit margin of 12.8%, although the high debt load and negative free cash flow introduce risks to the continuity of these payouts. The contraction in earnings growth contrasts with the stability of the utility sector, suggesting that the current dividend may be supported by existing cash flows rather than expanding earnings power. Overall, the growth and income profile is defined by modest revenue contraction, significant earnings pressure, and a reliance on a sustainable but potentially pressured dividend yield rather than capital appreciation or aggressive growth.
